Say "No" To No Pay

A blog about the importance of artists charging professional rates and not working for no pay.
Really?  You know they are going to shoot the auditions and use them and that’s it!

I challenge the “Seeking services for No Pay” businesses. Where is your sense of quality?

What kind of business hires amateur, free creatives?  What does that say about the quality of their product?

How can we value a brand when the company doesn’t value the quality of its models and other creatives used in its marketing campaign?

There is No Value to Credit and Portfolio Pieces

I’ve been working in the photo/video business for 25 years and have never, not once, heard of anyone getting a future paid job as a result of working a freebie.  Never once.

That’s because there is always someone else giving it away for free.  It’s like the pirate sharing sites.  If something is available for free, people will take it.  They won’t pay.

The power is in our hands—we have to take control or our industry.  We do that by not making it available for free.  When “free” is no longer available, the clients start asking, “What’s your rate?” and we get to ask “What’s your budget?”

If anyone offers a cut-rate or free, we have to confront them and challenge their professionalism and the company that is hiring them.

In working on a film, credit and a copy of the film is not pay.  Nor is food.  It’s expected.

I’ve had people tell me, after all the years of experience, that I might want to shoot something for free, as it would be good for my portfolio.  Have they seen my portfolio?  Do I really need more portfolio pieces?

The only thing that is worthwhile is silver in palm.  Cash.  Real pay.  Demand it.
